Halloween is on the horizon and it's a great time of year to travel down to our beautiful holiday resort of Brixham. With the chance to go bat spotting at Berryhead, great fun to be had aboard the replica of the Golden Hind, and Halloween competitions to enter, you’ll have a fangtastic time this October.
We have put together a few excellent activities you can get involved in this Halloween while holidaying on the English Riviera. Take a look to find something to suit you:
Death by Chocolate
Treat yourself and visit Chocella, Brixham’s answer to chocolate heaven. Open all year round, get your chocolate fix at this little shop. If you haven’t visited yet, you really don’t know what you are missing. This Halloween will see lots of spooky additions to the menu to both eat-in and take away.
How about braving a spiderweb chocolate soup; or scoffing on some skull and bones chocolates? There will also be Halloween eyeballs and bloodied white heart cupcakes! All these are available for individual purchase or to try on a tasting board.
Enter a sPoOkY wOokY Halloween Competition!
Look out for the vampire mermaid picture on Flossy and Jim’s social media - she will tell you everything you need to know!
To get started take a peek at their facebook page or have a scroll of their Twitter feed.
Spot a real-life bat or two!
The rare Greater Horseshoe Bat can be seen at Berry Head National Nature Reserve. If you are not familiar with bat spotting there are organised Berryhead Bat Walks between May and September each year where you can see this lesser-spotted species roosting in the 400 million-year-old limestone cliffs by peering through a unique cave camera.
The tour details the feeding habits of bats and how recent developments around the Berryhead area have contributed to supporting this endeavour. You’ll also get to see bats emerging from their roost and listen to their high-pitched calls using a bat detector. It is a fascinating experience and will give you great insights on easily recognisable characteristics and where to look in the future.
If you are not able to book onto the tour to hone your bat spotting skills before the beginning of October, you are still welcome to venture to Berryhead and watch the bats in flight. Head up to Berryhead for Halloween and walk down to The Quarry at dusk. Lie on the ground and look up towards the cliff and you can see the bats emerge! It’s awesome!
Visit Brixham's iconic Golden Hind
Brixham would not be Brixham without its lovely life-sized replica of the Golden Hind in the harbour bowl.
The Golden Hind has recently changed hands and the new owners have developed an interactive experience that strikes a great balance between living history, learning and FUN. And there is no better time to jump on board than this Halloween.
Solve the clues on Sid the Skeleton’s stamps to claim a prize, walk the plank, mouse hunt and see the ‘Golden Globe’, which was the route Frances Drake sailed on his circumnavigation. For Halloween only, there will be mini pumpkins to count and you could win a spookily themed prize.
Treat yourself to a Halloween cocktail or high tea in Liberty
Liberty in Brixham will be serving Halloween cocktails and mocktails from 27th October until 31st.
This fabulous cocktail bar and tea parlour on the harbour front is the perfect pit stop to refuel or enjoy a wonderfully wicked evening out with friends or family.
Stone Hunt
Try and find a painted stone at one of Brixham’s seaside coves or up on Berryhead. Extra points if you find a ghostly one!
Why not paint a Halloween-themed pebble and hide it yourself? Don’t forget to let us know if you do. Take a look at this Devon Facebook page for inspiration and ideas on where to look. You never know, someone may post that they have found your painted stone, so keep an eye out!
It may be a seaside town, but this little holiday haven knows how to spook it up! Stay here for a fun Halloween getaway by the sea and take a look at our spook-tacular collection of holiday cottages in Brixham.
I would make a skeleton joke, but you wouldn't find it very humerus. Happy Halloween!
